Exfoliating is an important step in your skincare routine – it helps to remove dead skin cells and reveal a brighter, smoother complexion. Here, a dermatologist shares her top tips on the correct way to exfoliate

Everyone’s skin is unique, demanding a tailored regime of creams and serums to stay in prime condition. Yet, there are some golden skincare commandments we should all be adopting – hydration, cleansing, toning, moisturising and exfoliating.

Despite some reservations about scrubbing away at our skin, fearing damage through abrasive products or techniques, it turns out that exfoliation is crucial for a smooth, glowing complexion when done properly. Our skin is our largest organ and naturally replaces dead cells approximately every month.

Failure to slough these off can lead to unsightly blemishes, clogged pores and even ingrown hairs. Thankfully, Dr Nicole James, a skincare guru, has taken to social media to dish out top tips for exfoliating with care. In a post, she advised: “Step one, choose your exfoliant wisely.

For sensitive or dry skin, go for chemical exfoliants like lactic or glycolic acid in body wash form. If you have oily skin that is prone to body acne – use salicylic acid. Physical scrubs are good, but avoid anything too harsh that might cause micro-tears in your skin.”

Dr James has recommended the shower as the prime spot for exfoliation and imparted some golden advice by saying: “Use lukewarm water to soften your skin and apply your exfoliator in gentle, circular motions. A loofah or exfoliating gloves can help for a deeper clean.”

She also warned against overdoing it for those hunting that glowy look: “Stick to one to two times per week if using a physical exfoliant. Chemical exfoliants can be used more frequently but start slowly to avoid irritation.”

But the skincare tips didn’t stop there, with Dr James advising on post-exfoliation care: “Exfoliation can strip your skin’s moisture, so follow up with a hydrating body lotion to lock in hydration and prevent dryness.”

Social media reacted positively, with one user responding: “Great tips! Thanks Doc.” Another added their personal routine into the mix, commenting: “I like to dry brush first, then use a chemical exfoliating wash 2x per week, and a Retinol Body Lotion on the other nights.”
