A vet has revealed the four dog breeds that are typically the most obedient – and it’s good news for owners of these popular pooches

Vet has dished out some expert advice to dog owners, revealing the four dog breeds that tend to be the most obedient.

“They are intelligent dogs that have been selectively bred for work,” Dr Rebecca MacMillan told the Express.co.uk, suggesting these breeds might be a tad easier to train.

With the right mix of mental and physical challenges, these canines could become exemplary well-behaved pets.

“There are always exceptions to the rule, but in my experience, the most obedient dog breeds include Border Collies, standard Poodles, Labrador Retrievers and German Shepherd Dogs,” Dr MacMillan disclosed.

The esteemed vet further explained: “Dogs that listen are often highly food or reward-motivated.”

“They are usually bright and keen to learn new tasks. They may have also been bred over many generations for their obedient nature, which can be useful for certain working environments.”

If your furry friend isn’t all ears when you’re giving commands, it might just be they’ve got too much pep in their step to pay attention.

Dr MacMillan noted: “Being under-exercised or bored can have a negative impact on [any dog’s] focus. Alternatively, your dog may not be interested in the rewards you are offering them, so you might need to think of a higher-value treat.”

She also recommends training in a spot where there’s nothing too exciting to distract them.

Attempting to cram too many new tricks into a dog’s training session can backfire, so experts recommend keeping it simple by training in a quiet spot and tackling one skill at a time. Dogs with a cheeky side often come with a “stubborn or independent streak” that might challenge their trainers.

However, Dr MacMillan offered reassurance: “With patience and consistency, these dogs can also learn to follow their owner’s commands.”
