If you’re after inspiration for the August bank holiday, these air fryer sausage rolls have been dubbed ‘irresistible’

Food fans have dubbed an easy sausage roll recipe “irresistible” and the “perfect” bake to whip up on the upcoming August bank holiday – and it can all be done in an air fryer.

In a much-anticipated episode of BBC Good Food’s ‘Air Fry-Day’, the culinary genius behind the scenes showed how easy it can be.

Samuel Goldsmith, Good Food’s food copy editor, took on the task of recreating the British picnic staple in the most in-demand kitchen appliance of the moment.

The recipe should take you no time at all. All you’ll need is your favourite sausages (with or without any added flavourings of your choice), a pack of pre-rolled puff pastry, one egg, and your trusty air fryer. Good Food’s recipe adds apple sauce and sage leaves, as well as a sprinkling of nigella seeds for an oniony aroma.

GoodFood’s Reel has been viewed over 100,000 times, racking up 565 likes and 24 comments. Food fans couldn’t help but share their thoughts on the air fryer snack in the replies.

Anya said, “100% making these tonight,” while Kentcooking wrote, “Great idea. Love a sausage roll and that little knife trick too.”

Wholovesausage commented: “Bank Holiday Sausage Rolls for August then.” Sarah Woods, author of Desi Kitchen, simply said: “Irresistible.”

So if you’re planning ahead for any August Bank Holiday snacks or treats, this is what you’re going to need for the Air Fryer Sausage Rolls.

Ingredients

  • 6 pork sausages
  • 10 sage leaves, finely sliced
  • 3 tbsp apple sauce
  • 320g pack ready-rolled puff pastry
  • plain flour, for dusting
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 2 tbsp nigella seeds (optional)

Method

First up, you’ll need to squeeze the sausage meat out of its skins and into a bowl. Then stir through the sliced sage leaves, apple sauce and a generous pinch of salt and freshly ground black pepper before setting aside.

Get your ready-rolled pastry and unroll it, peeling away the parchment lining and laying the pastry on a lightly floured surface. Shape the sausagemeat into a log across the centre of the pastry. The sausage should be 4cm to 5cm thick and reach both ends of the pastry.

Brush the beaten egg over the longer edges of the pastry, then carefully fold one side over to the other so the sausage is encased, leaving a lip of pastry on one side. Trim away the excess pastry before using a very sharp knife to cut the sausage log into six to eight pieces.

Using a knife or fork, crimp the trimmed edge. Use the rest of the egg to glaze the pastry all over. If you want to add nigella seeds, sprinkle them over the top.

Heat your air fryer to 200℃ and bake the sausage rolls for 20 to 30 minutes until the pastry is cooked and golden and the sausage meat is cooked through. Not everyone has the same air fryer, so Good Food recommended checking halfway through cooking to see how the sausage rolls are doing, and to vary the cooking time, if it’s necessary.

You can enjoy your sausage rolls warm straight out of the air fryer, or if you’re waiting for them to cool, they will keep chilled for up to three days.
