A school in Gaza has been hit by an airstrike from Israel, leading to the deaths of at least 30 people as search teams begin to look through the wreckage and debris

At least 30 people have been killed after an Israeli airstrike hit a girls’ school in Gaza, it has been reported.

The missiles hit a field hospital housed within the school in the central Gaza Strip. Among the dead are understood to be several children, although the exact figure is currently unknown.

Palestinian sources said the death toll is currently at 31 – but could increase in the coming hours. A spokesman for the Gaza government told local publication Anadolu: “The death toll from Israel’s attack on a field hospital inside a school housing displaced people in Deir al-Balah in central Gaza has risen to 31.

“The Israeli occupation army committed a new massacre a short while ago by bombing a field hospital set up inside Khadija School in Deir al-Balah in the Central Governorate. The occupation bombed the hospital with three missiles from fighter jets, which led to the killing of 18 people and dozens of injuries.”

It is understood the school was in an area which had previously been designated as a “humanitarian safe zone”, before the attack. Several people, many seriously injured were rushed to Al Aqsa Hospital where many were pronounced dead.

Israel military later claimed they had targeted a believed Hamas command centre which was being used to store weapons and plan attacks. The war in Gaza has killed more than 39,100 Palestinians, according to the territory’s health ministry.
