A cyclist suffered serious injuries when a white Fiat Qubo, driven by Jenny Calyton, collided with him, leading to an 18-month prison sentence at Liverpool Crown Court
A cyclist has been left with a life-changing brain injury after being hit by a driver at a pedestrian crossing.
Jenny Clayton, 51, from Norley Close, Warrington, was behind the wheel of a white Fiat Qubo when she collided with the cyclist on Priestley Street, Warrington, around 4.15pm on Friday, April 14 last year. The 47-year-old man from the area suffered severe injuries and was rushed to hospital.
Clayton was detained at the scene after failing a drug test and later charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving, as morphine was found in her blood, albeit below legal limits. Clayton had already admitted to the offence and was handed an 18-month prison sentence at Liverpool Crown Court on Friday, September 13, the ECHO reported.
Post-sentencing, Cheshire Constabulary’s Sergeant Andrew Dennison commented: “This case demonstrates the life-long repercussions of driving dangerously, and Clayton’s flippant attitude towards road safety has resulted in a totally innocent man sustaining life-changing injuries.”
He added: “Thankfully, she will spend the next 18 months behind bars where she will no longer pose a threat to road users. I hope that the conclusion of the case and the sentence handed to Clayton will give the victim’s family some closure and allow them to move forward with their lives knowing justice has been served.”
