Everton posted a video mocking former Toffees star Anthony Gordon after they held Newcastle to a draw, largely due to the Englishman missing a first-half penalty

Jamie Carragher has hit out at Everton after the Toffees posted a video brutally trolling Anthony Gordon.

Gordon missed two huge chances, including a penalty, as his Newcastle side were held to a goalless draw by Everton on Saturday. The attacker had spent 10 years at Goodison Park, coming through the club’s academy before starring in their first team.

In January 2023, the Englishman secured a £45million move to Newcastle after submitting a formal transfer request. He has starred for the Magpies since then, winning the club’s Player of the Year award last season.

But his return to Merseyside did not go well, with Jordan Pickford saving his penalty 10 minutes before half-time. That drew a brutal response from his former club, who posted a video of his spot-kick on social media with a Britain’s Got Talent-esque buzzer sound at the end.

That video has infuriated Newcastle fans, with Carragher also hitting out at the Toffees over the decision to post it. He insisted Gordon deserved more respect from his former club.

Carragher tweeted: “Local lad who came through your academy, helped keep you up under Lampard, wanted out because the club was a shambles on and off the pitch & who you then sold for £40million. The Peoples club!”

Gordon took full responsibility for Newcastle’s failure to beat Sean Dyche’s strugglers. But he insisted he would continue to step up to take penalties for the Tynesiders despite his miss.

Gordon wrote on social media: “A great performance, just couldn’t put them away, and that’s on me. Never easy missing but you’ll never ever see me shy away from stepping up for my team. Thanks to everyone that travelled – till next time.”

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe admitted he had been left frustrated that his side did not take home all three points. But he did praise them for showing the determination to take control of the game at a hostile Goodison Park.

“We created a lot of good chances and I am frustrated we haven’t won. But it was much better. It looked like we were snatching at chances. I have to credit the players because it is a difficult environment to play in and it is a much better defensive display from us too,” Howe told Match of the Day.

“Big steps forward. I think there has been a reaction. We stood up to the physical test and were technically very good. We are trying to break barriers and have an outstanding season. I think we are capable of more and we have some tough fixtures to come.

“I think Anthony [Gordon] handled the occasion very well. I think his all-round game was very good. He will be disappointed with the penalty. Credit to Jordan Pickford for the save.”
