Aubrey Plaza’s husband Jeff Baena has tragically died at the age of 47. The beloved filmmaker was found dead inside his Los Feliz home

The cause of death for Aubrey Plaza’s film director husband, Jeff Baena, has been confirmed as suicide by the LA County Medical Examiner’s Office.

In a recent development in the investigation into the filmmaker’s passing, it was revealed that Baena, 47, took his own life at his Los Feliz residence in California. His body was discovered by his assistant at 10:25 a. m.

Baena was celebrated for his exceptional contributions to the film industry during his lifetime. He is best known for his work on films such as Life After Beth (2014), Joshy (2016), The Little Hours (2017), Horse Girl (2020), Spin Me Round (2022), and for co-writing I Heart Huckabees (2004).

The Los Angeles Fire Department confirmed the late director’s cause of death to the Daily Mail.

Born on June 29, 1977, Baena was raised in a secular Jewish family in Miami, Florida. He graduated from the New York University Tisch School of the Arts with a degree in film before relocating to Los Angeles to chase his directing dreams, where he eventually met his future wife, actress Aubrey Plaza.

Baena and Plaza were together for more than a decade before they wed, though they chose to keep their personal life largely under wraps. Their first encounter took place back in 2011, when Plaza auditioned for the role in Baena’s film Life After Beth. Collaborating both on and off screen, they later came together for several films, including Joshy (2016) and Horse Girl (2020).

Baena’s directorial debut was Life After Beth, on which Plaza was by his side. Recounting the experience with passion in a 2014 Seensome interview, Baena said: “It’s all I ever want to do; it felt really comfortable and fun. I’ve been a writer for twelve years now and it was always a means to an end, I never wanted to be a writer, I wanted to be a director so this was always my intention and it felt right.”

Years down the line in December 2021, Baena decided to surprise Plaza by proposing to her. Recalling the precious memory, the White Lotus star mentioned in an interview that they had an impromptu yet idyllic wedding at their home amidst the pandemic.

Aubrey previously lifted the lid on her marriage to her late husband. Opening up during a September 2024 appearance on SiriusXM’s Howard Stern Show, Aubrey cheekily confessed “I would stay away [from dating actors],” when discussing how she had fallen head over heels for her director husband. “I’m married to a writer/director. I’ve never, like, really dated an actor [or] been with an actor for a long time.”

She added, “I think about that and I think, like, ‘Oh, God, I don’t want to be with myself’ or, ‘I don’t want to do that.’ But then, sometimes, I see there are so many actor couples and you’re, like, ‘Wow, look at them. They must really laugh it up.’”
