Passengers on JQ610 flight to Sydney from Melbourne, helped the cabin crew detain a teenager who allegedly attempted to board the JetStar plane armed with a shotgun

A pilot and several passengers tackled a teenager allegedly armed with a shotgun who attempted to smuggle the weapon onto a flight.

Several people were already in their seats and preparing for take off aboard the JetStar flight at Avalon Airport in Melbourne when the youngster arrived. He was the last to get on the flight to Sydney and became agitated as he spoke to a member of the cabin crew.

Terrifyingly, a passenger then spotted the shotgun protruding from the teenager’s jacket. Barry Clark told news.com: “He got more agitated and more agitated, I looked up and within a second I saw a barrel of a shotgun and I thought to myself, ‘That ain’t a tool that should be on a plane.

“In a split second I saw the barrel, but when I saw the complete gun I said, ‘We’re in trouble here.’ Then I saw it towards her chest and I thought, ‘Well I’ve got to do something.’

“So I got up quietly, he had his back to me, the young girl was facing me and the gun was visible. I knew if I went to the side and pushed the gun away from him, at least if it went off, it would go off on the side of the plane and there was no one there.”

The 17-year-old was arrested. A spokesman for JetStar said: “We are working with police and airport authorities as they investigate a security incident at Avalon Airport on Thursday. The safety of our passengers and crew is our number one priority and we can confirm there were no reported injuries.

“We know this would have been a very distressing situation and we are sincerely grateful to the customers who assisted our crew to safely manage the situation.”

Earlier this week a plane passenger sparked panic on a busy flight when he allegedly tried to open an emergency exit in mid-air. The plane was flying high over the Atlantic Ocean when the man jumped out of his seat and headed towards the door.

Fellow passengers began to scream as the man was said to have yanked at the door lever as flight attendants raced over to try and restrain him, with one getting injured in the process. Footage showed the passenger at the emergency exit as cabin crew members attempted to pull him back, while other travellers leap to their feet as they watched the dramatic scenes unfold just a few feet away.

The suspect was later seen lying on the floor with his hands tied behind his back after being restrained by Plus Ultra cabin crew. The incident took place during Flight 701 from Madrid, Spain, to the Venezuelan capital Caracas on Friday, February 28, on an Airbus A330.

The plane was about halfway through its journey when it happened and despite the scary event, the plane ended up landing at its destination ahead of schedule. The man was reportedly detained after the plane landed in Caracas.
