Keir Starmer will hold a press conference in Brussels this afternoon – but it is likely to be overshadowed by Donald Trump’s tariff threats to the UK.

The PM will meet the Nato secretary general Mark Rutte at the alliance’s headquarters in Brussels at around 3pm, followed by a press conference expected around 3.40pm. Keir Starmer will meet with EU chiefs but the looming prospect of a trade war with the US threatens is likely to dominant the conversation.

In comments overnight, Mr Trump claimed the UK is “out of line” but suggested a deal could me made with Mr Starmer, who he said was “very nice”. He threatened the EU with tariffs.

The Prime Minister’s visit to Europe, meant to focus on defence co-operation, is likely to be preoccupied with news from across the Atlantic. Over the weekend Mr Trump announced he will impose 25% trade taxes on goods coming from America’s nearest neighbours and largest trade partners – Canada and Mexico – as well as a 10% levy on Chinese goods.
