Kym Marsh has slammed friends who failed to check in on her after the death of her beloved cousin, saying she has been left disappointed by a lack of support during this painful moment in her personal life.

The actress and presenter, 49, revealed yesterday that her cousin Carl had died, leaving her and her family devastated. She described him as a “legend to all who knew him” and “one of a kind” as she spoke about her grief in a heartfelt Instagram tribute.

In a follow-up post on her Instagram stories today, the former Coronation Street star sent a pointed message to those she feels have been absent when she needed them most. She wrote: “Friends are the family you choose! Thank you so much to everyone who has checked in today to see how I am when I needed you the most! I love you all! Those that haven’t… you know who you are!” It comes after her recent announcement that she has teamed up with a soap star for a new Channel 5 drama.

Kym first announced Carl’s death yesterday, telling her followers: “I can’t believe I’m writing this. Today our family say goodbye to Carl. My cousin. A legend to all who knew him. A light turned out far too soon. A huge hole in our lives that will never be filled.”

She reflected on their childhood, looking back fondly on camping trips they went on together and times he made her laugh, adding: “Carl was the kindest, funniest, most unique person I’ve ever known… I will miss you until the end of time.”

Kym admitted she could hear Carl telling her not to cry, writing: “And I know you would be telling me to stop being a silly a**e and stop crying, and that you would want me to be where I am doing what I’m doing.

“Doesn’t stop me wishing I was there, or thinking of my family today, or grieving, or wishing I could make this better for everyone. I know that the family will give you the best send off cuz and that they will do you proud. We will love you forever and always. Good night god bless my wonderful cousin. Sleep tight.”

Carl’s death comes shortly the death of Kym’s on-screen father from Coronation Street, Frank Grimes. Frank, who played Barry Connor, appeared in more than 50 episodes of the ITV soap between 2008 and 2015. He died on August 1 at the age of 78 following a short illness, surrounded by his family.

The Dublin-born actor was widely respected for his work in both Ireland and the UK. The Irish Cultural Centre described him as “one of Ireland’s greatest actors”, adding: “He was so warm hearted, full of Dublin wit and charm in abundance and he had a beautiful sparkle in his eyes.”

Their tribute continued: “We know that Ireland has lost one of its truly great actors, the vintage of which is so rare and may never ever be matched again… We send our sincere condolences to his wife Ginnette, his daughter Tilly, his son Andrew, his 7 grandchildren and to all his extended family.”
