Tucked away on the edge of the Lake District in Cumbria lies the charming coastal town of Grange-over-Sands – boasting a stunning Victorian promenade, hidden gardens and breathtaking walks.
This picturesque town offers spectacular views over Morecambe Bay and enjoys a mild climate, making it an ideal destination for those seeking a relaxing getaway. Despite its proximity to popular tourist spots, Grange-over-Sands remains a tranquil retreat, providing a serene atmosphere amidst natural beauty.
Once dubbed the “Torquay of the North” during the Edwardian era, this town’s popularity endures, thanks to its unique micro-climate that allows semi-tropical plants to thrive. As a popular seaside resort located just south of the Lake District National Park, Grange-over-Sands offers endless opportunities for autumnal walks, allowing visitors to soak up the town’s lush surroundings and crisp seasonal air.
The town’s transformation from a small fishing village to an elegant resort began with the arrival of the railway in 1857, which led to the construction of numerous hotels offering a luxurious health spa experience, capitalizing on the region’s idyllic seaside climate.
Tucked away on the coastline of the Cartmel Peninsula, just seven miles south of Lake Windermere, this charming coastal town offers numerous spots to enjoy breathtaking sea views. The Victorian promenade in Grange is a key attraction, offering stunning vistas across Morecambe Bay’s shores.
However, visitors are urged to admire the sea views from the safety of the promenade due to dangerous quicksand on the saltmarsh, reports the Express. Adjacent to the promenade, the Ornamental gardens provide a delightful spot for an autumn stroll, with locals fondly referring to it as the “‘Duck Pond”.
A few miles west lies the village of Cartmel, home to the historic Cartmel Racecourse, which has been hosting events since 1856 against the backdrop of the English Lake District. Another must-see is Holker Hall, boasting a 25-acre garden that is part-formal and part-woodland.
Grange-over-Sands is conveniently located on the Furness Line, with services to Barrow-in-Furness, Lancaster, Manchester Airport and Preston. The nearest airport is Manchester, with Northern Rail operating a train to Grange-over-Sands every two hours.
