Interim England manager Lee Carsley believes more young English players leave the Premier League in search of more first team opportunities, highlighting the examples of Jamie Bynoe-Gittens and Sam Illing-Junior

Lee Carsley expects more English youngsters to go abroad to get first-team chances.

Former Manchester City starlet Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, 20, is playing at Borussia Dortmund while Sam Illing-Junior is on loan at Bologna having joined Aston Villa via Juventus.

Ex-Manchester United academy graduate Angel Gomes has broken into the England senior set-up under Carsley but only after moving to Lille for game time.

Former England boss Gareth Southgate regularly bemoaned the lack of English players starting in the Premier League and the ratio figures remain low as they are 32.4 per cent which is up on 31.1 per cent from last season but still less than a third.

Carsley believes that will encourage players to move overseas but also lead to England being more “proactive” when recruiting dual nationality players having missed out on the likes of Jamal Musiala who plays for Germany having represented England at youth levels.

Interim boss Carsley said: “It’s definitely something we’re aware of. It’s something Gareth brought to my attention – well to everyone’s attention a while back – in terms of the pool of players to choose from.

“Where we’ve improved of late is the dual nationality rule, trying to be a little bit more proactive in terms of our recruitment and those players who are dual nationality, making sure they have really good experiences in the pathway and get them used to being in England shirts and around St George’s.

“If you look at the 21s squad for instance and look at the U20/ELS squad there’s a lot of talent in the pathway and these players just need opportunities. You can see at the minute how Taylor Harwood-Bellis is doing at Southampton in his first season in the Premier League.

“I think given the opportunities we’ll have a lot more players but the climate is so extreme in terms of how important it is to stay in the Premier League managers are probably wary of giving young players a chance.

“Because of that we’ll probably find a lot more players going abroad. Jamie Bynoe-Gittens is a brilliant example of that. Sam Illing-Junior. Going abroad to get minutes and play first team. But it’s definitely something I’m aware of.”
