Leeds United boss Daniel Farke is unconcerned by Jurgen Klopps new role as Red Bull’s Head of Soccer and is adamant that his side retain autonomy despite their new investors

Leeds United boss Daniel Farke has hit back at the suggestion Jurgen Klopp could have a significant role at Elland Road.

The former Liverpool manager has been confirmed to be taking on the role of Head of Soccer for Red Bull in the new year, in his first job since departing Anfield. The 57-year-old is set to mentor coaches at clubs within Red Bull’s portfolio as he steps away from the touchline.

This is expected to primarily include the likes of RB Leipzig, Red Bull Salzburg and New York Red Bulls, but the drinks manufacturer does have a minority share in Leeds. Red Bull purchased a stake in the Championship side from 49ers Enterprises and also became their front-of-shirt sponsor.

With the news of Klopp’s imminent arrival, it was suggested an early task would be to keep a ‘close watch’ on Farke. The German coach has refuted such notions and is unconcerned with the prospect with Leeds having it’s own identity.

He said: “There are obviously a few Red Bull teams like in Leipzig, Salzburg, New York and so on. We are Leeds United and for that it is clear, he has a big impact on the Red Bull clubs and for us not that much.

“We are Leeds United and I think no one of our supporters would allow us to try and copy something or follow a similar philosophy. We are a pretty unique club and also have our own values, principles, philosophy, our own way that we want to play.

“As far as I know, this is exactly what the 49ers are standing for. They know how special this club is and they don’t want to copy someone else and for that, we will always be Leeds United.”

Farke’s stance will only be strengthen should the side build upon their start to the season. The Whites have lost just one of their opening nine games and next welcome unbeaten Sheffield United on Friday night.

Klopp meanwhile is excited by the prospect of his new role. The ex-Borussia Dortmund boss is keen to support Red Bull’s current talent.

“After almost 25 years on the sideline, I could not be more excited to get involved in a project like this,” he said following confirmation of his position. “The role may have changed but my passion for football and the people who make the game what it is has not.

“By joining Red Bull at a global level, I want to develop, improve and support the incredible football talent that we have at our disposal. There are many ways that we can do this front using the elite knowledge and experience that Red Bull possesses to learning from other sports and other industries.

“Together we can discover what is possible. I see my role primarily as a mentor for the coaches and management of the Red Bull clubs but ultimately, I am one part of an organisation that is unique, innovative and forward looking. As I said, this could not excite me more.”
