Man Utd issue mixed injury update with two stars set for extended spell on sidelines

Manchester United’s preparations to face Brentford were boosted as they welcome three stars back to training but Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire have been ruled out for weeks

Manchester United duo Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire have been ruled out for a number of weeks through injury.

Both picked up muscle issues against Aston Villa ahead of the international break and the former pulled out of the England squad as a result. Mainoo has started every United match in the Premier League this season and now Erik ten Hag will need to arrest the club’s ailing form without the midfielder against Brentford and beyond.

The Dutchman has started to see his 10-man injury list start to be whittled down, however. Noussair Mazraoui, Alejandro Garnacho and Amad Diallo were all in training ahead of welcoming the Bees to Old Trafford after withdrawing from their own international camps.

Mazroui left the field against Aston Villa but later went under the knife for a minor precautionary corrective procedure after experiencing heart palpitations. The ex-Bayern Munich defender has returned to training at Carrington however.

Garnacho didn’t represent Argentina as he dealt with a persistent knee issue, while Amad pulled out of Ivory Coast action due to illness. It appears both will be in contention to play against Brentford this weekend.

Manuel Ugarte made it to international duty but was forced off during his nation’s draw with Ecuador. The summer signing was seen icing an issue and reportedly complained of muscle pain in his right thigh before being replaced late in the game.

Ugarte completed a recovery session after making a swift return from South America with United not providing any indication of lasting issues ahead of the weekend.

Long-term absentees Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw remain out of contention however. The Dutch full-back participated in the first part of a group session but ultimately continues his recovery.

Shaw meanwhile continues his rehabilitation from a muscle injury. Ten Hag had suggested the England star could return following the international break.

“We hope Luke can return after the international break quickly,” said the 54-year-old earlier this month. “I don’t know if it’s the first game, we’re hoping for [it], but I can’t, in this moment, tell this with 100 per cent security. But, yeah, from now on, we have two-and-a-half weeks to work to that point. And, shortly after, he’ll be there.”

Mason Mount is currently continuing his recovery. The former Chelsea midfielder suffered a knock in addition to the head injury sustained in defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.
