A memorial for tragic One Direction star Liam Payne that was set to be held today in Glasgow has been postponed due to major safety fears surrounding Storm Ashley

A tribute event for Liam Payne following his tragic death has been delayed due to safety concerns over Storm Ashley.

The former One Direction star sadly died in Buenos Aires, Argentina on Wednesday, October 16 at the tender age of just 31.

Tributes have flooded in from fans and fellow musicians alike for the star who rose to worldwide fame as part of the boyband alongside Louis Tomlinson, Harry Styles, Zayn Malik and Niall Horan. A fan account had invited people in and around Glasgow to join them at George Square for a memorial to the singer today.

However, it has now been postponed due to the risk posed by Storm Ashley. A yellow wind warning is in place for Glasgow until midnight, with gusts exceeding 50mph for much of the day, reaching 65mph by the evening.

Some parts of Scotland have been issued an amber warning with the Met Office predicting a ‘good chance’ of power cuts, damage to buildings and a ‘likely’ danger to life. The rescheduled memorial will now take place next weekend on Saturday, October 26 at 2pm.

Organisers expressed their “worry about people’s safety making the journey to the memorial and back home”, reports GlasgowLive.

Organisers have announced a postponement of the memorial for Liam Payne, initially scheduled for today at 2pm in George Square, Glasgow, due to safety concerns. They explained: “The memorial being held for Liam Payne at George Square in Glasgow today at 2pm has sadly been postponed until Saturday 26th October at 2pm. The weather, although not bad in Glasgow at the moment, is unsafe with high winds for surrounding areas, and we worry about people’s safety making the journey to the memorial and back home again afterwards.”

Adding a note of caution, they said, “This is not a risk worth taking, and Liam would be the first person issuing a warning to take care. We hope to see everyone on Saturday. Take care.”
