Liverpool have been linked with making Newcastle star Alexander Isak their latest big-money signing this summer and the Reds have been told exactly when they could sign the striker

Liverpool would ‘love’ to continue their summer splurge with the signing of Alexander Isak – but they have encountered a huge problem. The Reds are in the midst of a lucrative spending spree as boss Arne Slot attempts to refresh his squad.

Jeremie Frimpong has been signed from Bayer Leverkusen as Trent Alexander-Arnold’s replacement. He is expected to be followed by both Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez after Liverpool thrashed out deals worth £100m and £40m with Leverkusen and Bournemouth respectively.

And the Reds might not even be done there, with Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi touted as a potential replacement for the outgoing Jarell Quansah. Newcastle sensation Isak is a name that has been linked with Liverpool in the past, and according to The Telegraph, the Swede is a player that the Reds would ‘love’ to sign.

But it is detailed that Liverpool ‘almost certainly’ have no chance of signing him this summer. Newcastle would want to bank over £150m for their star forward this window – and that is a fee that seems hard for Liverpool given their huge spending so far.

As it stands, nothing is imminent between the Reds and Newcastle, with discussions over Isak – both formal and informal – not even being held at this stage. Meanwhile, Isak appears to be satisfied with life at St James’ Park.

Speaking last season, he said: “I don’t know much, to be honest. From within the club and from our side there are absolutely no discussions. It’s just full focus on playing for me. There’s not much to say, really. I’ve commented on my situation and my security in Newcastle several times.

“It’s been written how much I love the city and the club, how well I feel there. I’m not thinking about the future. I just want to perform for Newcastle. Now we won the cup, but we want to finish strong and reach the Champions League games. That’s where my focus lies.

“There is no reason for me to think about anything else (other than Newcastle). I feel incredibly comfortable at Newcastle. The only focus I have is on playing.”

Meanwhile, Eddie Howe has spoken out on Isak’s future and could not completely rule out a sale – but has reaffirmed his desire to keep the striker at the club. He said: “I never make those guarantees about any player and it’s not to do with Alex’s future but I’d be foolish to sit here and do anything like that.

“We want to keep our strongest players, I’ve said that ever since I’ve been here and sat in this seat. We have to try and keep our best players and bring in more good players to make us even stronger because the ambition of the club and everyone connected with the club is long-term success and that’s the only way to get that.”
