Liverpool star Curtis Jones was sent off after the final whistle in their clash with Merseyside rivals Everton on Wednesday evening but supporters do not appear to be holding it against him

Liverpool fans have been full of praise for Curtis Jones despite his dramatic red card against Everton.

The Reds academy graduate was sent off after the final whistle at Goodison Park on Wednesday by referee Michael Oliver. He was left unhappy by Abdoulaye Doucoure’s wild celebrations in front of the away fans.

Jones clashed with the midfielder, which triggered a furious clash between both sets of players, leading to both getting sent off. Liverpool boss Arne Slot and his assistant Sipke Hulshoff were also dismissed in the post-match scenes.

But Liverpool fans are not holding Jones’ red against him and have instead showered him with praise on social media. Commenting on an historic post on Jones’ official Instagram account, one fan wrote: “Have a beautiful night sleep tonight, Curtis lad.”

And the praise continued. A further fan said: “huge respect for you curtis”, while another Liverpool supporter replied: “Top player who cares about the fans we love you curtis.”

And some even went as far as suggesting Jones has written his name into Liverpool folklore. A further fan said: “You liverpool legend we liverpool fans appreciate you YNWA Curtis”, with another claiming that Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard “would be proud”.

Another Liverpool supporter said: “Curtis I always loved you but after you just ran to protect the fans, that’s true Scouser style, we all respected you even more and loved you even more, well done our boy.”

However, it wasn’t just Liverpool supporters that had their say, with Everton fans also getting in on the act. A huge array of them simply shared an image of Doucoure following his clash with Jones.

And while supporters had their fun on Jones’ account, Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has already pointed the finger for the post-match brawl and believes the Everton man is solely to blame. He said: “We saw how they celebrated the goal, they have all the right to.

“I think Abdoulaye Doucoure wanted to provoke our fans, I think that is what I saw and Curtis Jones didn’t think it was the right thing to do. And then you know what happens if there is a little tussle.

“I didn’t think the referee had the game under control. Both teams had to deal with it. This was their cup final. I think the referee had a big part in the game, in terms of certain challenges were given as fouls and similar weren’t.”
