Arne Slot’s Liverpool squad would be boosted by the signing of Jhon Duran from Aston Villa, according to former midfield star Didi Hamann

Liverpool are being urged to line up a move for Jhon Duran following the Aston Villa striker’s impressive start to the season.

Duran scored the opening goal in Saturday’s win against struggling champions Manchester City to make it 12 goals in all competitions this season. And the Colombia striker has now appeared to usurp Ollie Watkins as Unai Emery ’s first choice.

Liverpool meanwhile have seen Darwin Nunez criticised heavily throughout the season, although his long wait for a goal ended in the Carabao Cup quarter-final win away to basement team Southampton on Wednesday night – while Diogo Jota has had a number of injury issues.

Former midfielder Didi Hamann therefore thinks the Reds hierarchy should be weighing up a move for a player who was desperate to leave Villa in the summer – having been bizarrely asked if they might have an interest in Harry Kane.

“To be honest, [Kane] seems happy at Bayern Munich and I don’t think Munich want to sell him either,” Hamann told Boyle Sports. “I don’t think that will happen and Liverpool have never been the biggest spenders, so it’s unlikely.

And Hamann said Liverpool should instead target Duran. “Jhon Duran is a brilliant player and the way he plays, it always helps having a player with a physical presence up front,” he said. “He created space up front and made a huge impact for Villa [against City] – I certainly think Liverpool need to keep an eye on him.”

Duran, 21, had posed on social media during the summer transfer window hinting at a move to West Ham but that deal broke down because the Irons would not stump up enough money.

But he has won back the affection of Villa fans with a string of impressive cameos off the bench. Fourteen of his Premier League appearances so far have come off the bench but he has now started three times and also contributed three goals in half a dozen Champions League appearances.
