Liverpool are ready for a January transfer window which could dramatically alter the makeup of Arne Slot’s squad in 2025, with three star names free to negotiate with other clubs
It’s almost 2025 and for Liverpool fans, it promises to be a year for the ages.
Arne Slot’s men are sitting pretty at the top of both the Premier League and Champions League, with the potential to win a quadruple three years after Jurgen Klopp’s Reds went agonisingly close. But Slot will know that Liverpool can’t rest on their laurels and must continue to improve and produce results like Sunday’s 5-0 triumph at West Ham.
That improvement could come via new signings, as Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes is yet to pull off his first major move. But the Reds won’t want to go backwards either, and that’s what the departures of Mo Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold could do.
Here’s a round-up of the latest transfer news from Anfield.
Inter Milan cool on Van Dijk interest
Liverpool are unlikely to lose captain Virgil van Dijk to Inter Milan, who’ve baulked at the centre-back’s wages. Van Dijk, 33, is nearing the end of his contract and can freely negotiate with clubs from Wednesday, January 1.
Inter had considered the Netherlands international as a replacement for compatriot Stefan de Vrij, who’s also approaching the final sixth months of his deal. But according to Inter Live, Van Dijk’s €8million (£6.6m) per year salary has put the Italian champions off making a move.
Slot targets Real Madrid star Tchouameni
Arne Slot wants to do what Jurgen Klopp couldn’t: bring Aurelien Tchouameni to Liverpool. The Frenchman was heavily linked with a move to Anfield in 2022, only to join Real Madrid.
Tchouameni is currently playing as a makeshift centre-back for Madrid but Fichajes report that Slot wants to use the 24-year-old to bolster his midfield. Liverpool missed out on signing Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad in the summer transfer window and have relied on in-form Ryan Gravenberch in the No.6 role.

Salah offers contract update
Mo Salah insists that his focus is firmly on helping Liverpool win the Premier League title. The winger, 32, hasn’t been shy in discussing his future at Anfield, confirming in November that he’d not yet been offered a new contract.
Speaking after his one goal and two assists against West Ham, Salah told Sky Sports: “We are far away from [agreeing a new deal]. I don’t want to put something in the media and people start saying stuff, but nothing really has moved on. Now I am focused on the team and hopefully we win the Premier League.”
