Luis Enrique managed to add another Premier League scalp to his growing collection as PSG reached the Champions League final by beating Arsenal and the Spaniard was not afraid to have some fun after the final whistle

Luis Enrique joked that Ligue 1 remained a ‘farmers’ league’ despite having racked up a quadruple of Premier League scalps this season. His Paris Saint-Germain secured their place in the Champions League final on Wednesday by easing past Arsenal.

After a 1-0 success in North London, they then rubber stamped their victory with a 2-1 win in the French capital on Wednesday evening. That also saw PSG rack up a unique statistic having beaten all four of the Premier League’s clubs in the Champions League this season.

The Ligue 1 giants beat Manchester City in the league stage, while managing to get past each of Liverpool, Aston Villa and now Arsenal in the knockouts. Speaking in the aftermath of his side’s win, Enrique amusingly joked that Ligue 1 was a farmer’s league – usually a disparaging insult used by those unconvinced of the quality of the league.

Speaking to TNT Sports, he said: “It means a lot, everyone is dreaming with getting to the Champions League final. Our first goal when we arrived in Paris was making history and we are in the right path.”

He added: “The league of farmers, no? We are the league of farmers. But it’s nice. We are enjoying the result and the compliments of everybody speaking of our team — we are a young team, our mentality, our character of how we play football. It’s nice. I have to congratulate my players because they are great.”

PSG are the second slightly unfancied side to seal a place in the final later this month after Inter Milan. The Italian side overcame Spanish giants Barcelona in an epic two-legged semi-final.

And Enrique is aware of the difficult task that awaits his side in Munich – but is determined to celebrated first. He added: “It’s going to be tough but I think they have the same feeling. I think it’s going to be an interesting final, very difficult for both teams. Special moment for all of us, also for them.

“I think they are getting a second final in the last three years which means that they are a great team but we have time to analyse Inter deep. Now it’s time to celebrate and try to enjoy and have some rest.”

PSG will now play out their final Ligue 1 games before they give any thought to taking on Inter in the final. Already crowned champions of France, Enrique’s side take on Montpellier and Auxerre in their closing fixtures. They also have a French Cup final date against Reims later this month as they aim to secure an unprecedented treble.
