Bedfordshire: Possible tornado spotted from main road

This is the dramatic moment drivers on a motorway spotted a frightening tornado near Luton as eerie footage captured the sudden change in weather.

A passenger is filming the remarkable tornado footage, which occurred just after 4pm on Sunday as motorists are seen driving in hazardous conditions.

The clip went viral as social media users queued up to praise the “great footage” as others said it was “quite impressive that majority of summer there hasn’t really been many storms or at least memorable ones compared to the last 3 days.”

It comes just days after a terrifying tornado was spotted sweeping over a quiet Cotswolds town. The fierce spiral of wind raged through Tewkesbury in Gloucestershire causing havoc to anything in its path as millions were hit by storms. Resident Rich Martin caught footage of the storm on Friday as parts of the country faced freak weather to mark the end of the summer.

Tewkesbury’s tornado hit at around 4.24pm on Friday – around four hours after the town of Aldershot, Hampshire, faced a similar tornado which damaged homes and uprooted trees.

Rich, 38, a builder and dad to six-year-old Grace, said his daughter was “flabbergasted” by the freak weather event. “It was a spectacle in real time. It lasted around 20 seconds. The winds got up very dramatically, felt like a scene from twister. Right place, Right time!”

The Tornado and Storm Research Organisation confirmed a tornado in Aldershot at around 12.25pm on Friday, which was tracekd moving 1.2miles through the town. Nobody was hurt in the storm although one resident’s chimney was damaged, while one tree was ripped out of a resident’s garden.

It comes as the Environment Agency has warned of “significant” flooding on Monday across parts of England.

Flood duty manager Sarah Cook said “persistent heavy rain and thunderstorms” could lead to some property flooding and travel disruption.

She said: “Persistent heavy rain and thunderstorms could lead to significant surface water flooding on Monday across parts of England.

“The impacts could include localised flooding in urban areas and fast-responding catchments, including some property flooding as well as travel disruption. The risk from river flooding remains low.

“Environment Agency teams are out on the ground and ready to support local authorities in responding to surface water flooding.

“We urge people to plan their journeys carefully, follow the advice of local emergency services on the roads and not to drive through flood water – it is often deeper than it looks and just 30cm of flowing water is enough to float your car.

“People should check their flood risk, sign up for free flood warnings and keep up to date with the latest situation as well as following @EnvAgency on X, formerly Twitter, for the latest flood updates.”
