A large section of the M60 is closed and several people have been injured after a HGV crashed into six vehicles in a horror collision – which saw debris flung into the road

A horror crash involving a lorry and six other vehicles has left several people injured and brought the M60 to a standstill this evening.

Police, fire crews and paramedics raced to a stretch of the M60 in Salford and closed it down after the “serious multi-vehicle collision” sent debris flying into the road and left a number of people wounded. A horrifying image captured by a witness on scene showed the moment a huge lorry veered off the road and smashed into a row of unsuspecting cars.

Multiple vehicles are believed to have been involved in the crash between junction 15, for the M61, and junction 16 for Swinton, where a HGV was seen colliding into an embankment after crossing the carriageway.

One person has been rushed to Salford Royal Hospital with serious injuries this evening, whilst four others are being assessed by paramedics at the scene, Manchester Evening News reports. Major delays are expected to last across the M60 into the evening while officers remain on scene to investigate the circumstances of the crash, which happened shortly after 7pm. Drivers have meanwhile been advised to avoid the area and take alternative routes.

Greater Manchester Police said in a statement: “We are responding to a collision on the M60 motorway at junction 15 in Swinton involving an HGV crossing the central reservation, into the opposite lane, before going into the embankment. At approximately 7pm this evening (20/03/2025), the HGV crashed into six vehicles.

“The M60 is closed clockwise and anticlockwise between junction 15 and 16. Several people have been injured and paramedics are on scene. We ask motorists avoid this section of the M60 this evening. Your patience is appreciated as emergency services continue to provide medical aid and investigate the incident.”

National Highways said the road is likely to be closed “for some time” whilst “all emegency services” respond to the collision. It said in a statement this evening: “The M60 in Greater Manchester is closed in both directions between J15 (M61) and J16 (Swinton) due to a serious multi-vehicle collision.

“All Emergency services including North West Motorway Police Group are in attendance. National Highways Traffic Officers are also on scene assisting with traffic management. Due to the nature of the incident, the road is likely to be closed for some time.”
