A man who found a receipt in a cash machine was stunned to find what had been written on it. The receipt has since gone viral and left many members of the public in disbelief too as they tried to figure out whose receipt it was. While it was obvious the person had plenty of money in the bank, people couldn’t believe why it was still in the account.

A post to the r/povertyfinance Reddit page had one stunned member of the public share the find and wonder what it was that the person before them at the machine had been doing.

Their post to the subreddit saw them share what appeared to be a “pretty solid emergency fund” simply resting in the account. They wrote: “Found ATM receipt, who is keeping $51,000+ (£38,000) in checking?

“Found this receipt on the ground when I went to use the ATM. I am no expert here, but with $51,000+ in checking, that is a pretty solid emergency fund.

“My heart and soul are bleeding thinking about how much money could be earned in interest, even conservatively with CDs, or through dividends. Why would anyone keep this much in checking!? Obviously this person has more money than me, am I doing something wrong?”

Members of the public believe they have solved who the person with this account could be. One person who claimed to be a bank teller wrote: “Bank teller here – a surprising number of elderly people.”

Another added: “$51,000 might not be a lot to this person. They could have 99% tied up in increments and this is their pocket change that’s 100% liquid.”

A third shared: “It’s possible they aren’t “keeping” that much in there over the long term. Maybe it’s temporary. My sister had 20,000 in her account for a few days between getting a loan for law school and paying tuition.

“I had 30,000 in my account once just before putting a down payment on a condo. Both those situations lasted just a few days. Maybe this receipt is from someone who is about to make a life altering purchase.”

Whatever the case it stunned the original poster, who spoke to Newsweek about the bizarre receipt find. They said: “The receipt was inside of the machine, the prior user never took it.

“I looked at it and was surprised. My whole life, I have been told to keep an emergency fund, but $51,000+ was shocking to me. Why on Earth would anyone have that amount in a checking account?”

Others were horrified to see the receipt had been posted online. One person wrote: “This is why I keep my ATM receipts. Ain’t nobody’s business.”

Another added: “Why can’t people mind their own business instead of posting private financials for internet attention?”
