Former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is seemingly closing in on a return to football management almost three years on from his Old Trafford exit

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is said to be in talks over a new role – just weeks after admitting he’d love another crack at managing Manchester United.

The Norwegian, 51, left the Red Devils back in November 2021. And despite links to numerous jobs in recent years, Solskjaer has yet to throw himself back into management.

Despite keeping a low profile, Solskjaer has insisted on a number of occasions that he isn’t done with management – and it now seems as though the former Old Trafford favourite is closing in on a return.

It’s outlined that Solskjaer was recently approached by Denmark with a view to becoming their new head coach. However, that opportunity was declined by Solskjaer, who is instead in discussions over a very different role.

According to Danish outlet Tipsbladet, the former United chief is in talks with a ‘big club’ over a potential return to the dugout, which influenced his decision to decline an interview with Denmark director of football Peter Moller.

Solskjaer guided United to a second-place finish in the Premier League during his final full season at the helm. He was axed in the opening months of the 2021/22 campaign, though, following a rotten run of results.

Erik ten Hag was appointed as the club’s next permanent manager the following summer, but he too is now at risk. The Dutchman narrowly avoided the sack in the summer and is once again in peril with United’s top brass discussing his future earlier this week.

When he was pushed on the prospect of an emotional Old Trafford return, Solskjaer admitted that he would be unable to turn down the chance to manage his beloved United again during a Q&A at the Oslo Business Forum last month.

He said: “If the [United] family asks, I would say yes every day of the week. It feels wrong to talk about jobs that other people have now – but I would say yes, of course.”

He also hinted he was open to an international job in the future – namely the Norway job. Solskjaer continued: “I am a proud Norwegian, and of course if the question arises, when Ståle decides to give up, I will happily engage in discussions.

“I am a proud Norwegian and proud of where I come from.”
