Marcus Rashford scored twice on his Champions League debut for Barcelona as the Catalan giants beat Newcastle 2-1, and the Manchester United forward was inundated with messages of support

Marcus Rashford has received backing from his Manchester United teammates following a sensational evening with Barcelona in the Champions League.

The United academy product made his European debut for Barcelona against Newcastle United – after joining the Catalan giants on loan this summer. Following a difficult opening 45 minutes, Rashford burst into life in the second half, netting a superb double at St James’ Park.

His maiden strike for Barca arrived via a header from Jules Kounde’s delivery, before he unleashed a thunderous 25-yard effort that sealed victory for Hansi Flick’s outfit. Newcastle managed a consolation through Anthony Gordon in added time.

Taking to Instagram, the 27-year-old posted snaps from the encounter with his message: “Great way to kick off the Champions League.” Rashford’s Old Trafford colleagues, who seemingly followed proceedings intently, then replied to the upload to demonstrate their backing.

Rasmus Hojlund – currently on loan at Napoli – topped the responses with: “Well done Marcus,” accompanied by a love heart emoji, he wrote. Jadon Sancho – also temporarily away from the club – responded with clapping and fire emojis.

United skipper Bruno Fernandes gave the post a like and posted a message moments after Rashford’s spectacular long-range effort on his Instagram story. Present United stars Ayden Heaven, JJ Gabriel, Joshua Zirkzee, Tyrell Malacia and Harry Amass also ‘liked’ the upload. Zirkzee additionally commented, penning ‘love it’ alongside a red heart emoji.

Alejandro Garnacho, who swapped United for Chelsea permanently during the summer transfer window, simply wrote: “Wow!” Antony – another former United winger – expressed his admiration with a face exhaling emoji and added two fire emojis for emphasis.

Chatting post-match to TNT Sports, the England international said: “It is going good. I am obviously learning a lot.

“It is a new way of football. Iam enjoying it all and I think it is making me a better player.

“That is what I am here to do – to help the team win, but also to try to improve and be the best that I can. It is an amazing experience. I have always been a huge admirer of Barcelona as most people my age have watched them play from when we were younger.

“It is amazing football and amazing players. We just want to win as much as possible. I am very motivated and determined. The quality we have in the team excites me. It is so refreshing to play with these players.”
