Brian, 36, a brown belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu said how his “adrenaline was pumping” as he dashed into the home in Sydney after a woman had come round calling for help

A martial arts expert has told how he “grabbed” and “immobilised” an alleged burglar who had run into a neighbour’s home.

Brian, 36, a brown belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu said how his “adrenaline was pumping” as he dashed into the home in Sydney, Australia, after a woman had come round calling for help.

After wrestling with the 37-year-old man, he was then reportedly able to restrain him until police arrived at the incident which took place in the Canada Bay area of the city shortly before 7.30pm on Monday.

Brian, whose surname has not been given, is said to have heard “banging and screaming” while in his own home and so he went to his front door to investigate what was going on. At that point a woman who was a neighbour came rushing up and said that somebody had broken into her home.

“She basically said she needed help, and some man had broken into her house, and I kind of just put pants on and ran outside,” he reportedly said.

Brian went round to the neighbour’s house but couldn’t see any intruder at first, although he saw a broken fence and a damaged door which appeared to be where he had entered.

It is claimed that the alleged burglar was carrying a piece of wood with nails in it, and when he saw Brian he ran into a room where he was wrestled to the ground.

Brian told news.com.au: “My adrenaline was pumping at the time, said a few bad things, grabbed hold of him and got him into a position where I could immobilise him.”

The neighbour had been doing martial arts for about 14 years and he told how he tackled the alleged intruder before the man was restrained. The man was then held to the ground until police arrived, with Brian saying that his aim was to stop him and not hurt anyone.

Meanwhile, New South Wales Police has reportedly confirmed it was called to a report of a burglary where a man, aged 37, was arrested. A policewoman said: “Officers attached to Burwood Area Command attended and were told a man, allegedly armed with a piece of timber, damaged a side gate before entering the house. A 37-year-old man was arrested at the scene and taken to Burwood Police Station. He was charged with aggravated break and enter and will appear before Burwood Local Court on Tuesday 10 December 2024.”
