Lewis Hamilton joins Ferrari for the 2025 Formula 1 season with a whopping £50million-per-year salary and the dream of winning an eighth drivers’ title before he retires
Martin Brundle is certain that Lewis Hamilton is “unquestionably” worth his mega-money Ferrari salary.
And the Sky Sports F1 favourite is also convinced that the 40-year-old still has what it takes to fight for the title. That’s despite joining his new team on the back of his worst ever drivers’ championship finish of seventh place in 2024.
Ferrari clearly believe their new recruit can still perform at the highest level. The seven-time champion has been given a two-year contract with the possibility of a third being added on, believed to be worth around £50million per season to Hamilton in base salary alone.
But there is an extraordinary level of interest in Hamilton’s move to Italy, demonstrated by the response to his first Ferrari test this week from fans who went to the Fiorano track to witness it for themselves and the millions more around the globe who saw the photos and footage of the landmark moment.
And Brundle believes that is why the deal represents good value for Ferrari, even despite that huge salary. Speaking on Sky Sports News, the 65-year-old said: “He is unquestionably [worth the money] already.
“Two of the biggest names in the 75-year history of Formula 1, some might say the biggest names. Lewis Hamilton dressed all in the scarlet of the Prancing Horse, an absolutely extraordinary story. It’s a story, a gift, that will keep giving for us at Sky F1.
“This is only Hamilton’s third team in Formula 1, and he will want to go there and show that, despite just turning 40, he’s not over the hill like some people were saying last year, and he will want to show he has made the right decision again. He will go there full of energy.”
It remains to be seen, however, whether he will be able to use that enthusiasm to still compete at the sharp end of the grid. Questions have been raised over Hamilton’s ability to do so after an underwhelming final Mercedes season which saw him win twice but still be outperformed by younger team-mate George Russell.
But Brundle is confident his fellow Brit still has what it takes to secure the eighth drivers’ title he dreams of that would take him beyond the current record he shares with Michael Schumacher. The Sky F1 favourite added: “There are some big challenges.
“His team-mate Charles Leclerc has been there seven years effectively and knows exactly where the buttons are, and who does what, and makes things happen. Lewis will have to face that, and the fact Leclerc is incredibly fast. But I have no doubt that if Ferrari have a race-winning car or a championship-winning car, then Lewis can win races and even the championship.”
