Martin Lewis has urged holidaymakers to get travel insurance in place as soon as they’ve booked their break, in case something happens before your holiday and you can no longer travel

Martin Lewis has issued a warning to anyone who has booked a holiday this year.

The MoneySavingExpert.com founder has urged holidaymakers to get travel insurance in place as soon as they’ve booked their break, in case something happens before your holiday and you can no longer travel. Martin Lewis issued the warning on the latest episode of his Martin Lewis Money Show Live broadcast on ITV.

Martin said: “Travel insurance is not just to cover you while you’re away. It’s also very important to cover you in case something happens before you go that stops you going. So I have a rule that, you’ll hear why I’m taking a deep breath in a moment… I have a rule: you should get your travel insurance ASAB as soon as you book. ASAB…”

He added: “The reason I do this is every year someone asks me a question something like, ‘I’ve been diagnosed with cancer. We can’t go on the holiday. They’re saying we can’t have our money back. What do I do?’ And I’m impotent. Because the answer is, you get on your travel insurance. And they say, ‘Well, I haven’t got my travel insurance yet’. Do not get your travel insurance the day before you go. You get your travel insurance ASAB.”

Travel insurance can cover you on anything from medical expenses, to your luggage going missing, depending on the type of cover you book. You should use comparison websites to check the best prices for travel insurance. You’ll need to enter details about yourself, such as your age and medical history, as well as information about your trip, including where you’re going and for how long.

For more tips to make your holiday cheaper, Martin has previously warned how you should never pay in pounds when making purchases abroad. The MoneySavingExpert.com founder said you should always pay in the local foreign currency instead, due to poor conversion rates when paying in Sterling.

If you want to take cash out with you before your trip, Martin advised comparing rates online, to see where you can get the best deals. You should never exchange your money at the airport, as this always offers the worst rates – however, if you do need to do this, he recommended calling and booking your transaction ahead of time.
