Money-saving guru Martin Lewis has warned ‘do it right now’ to any Brits who have booked a holiday – following a series of questions from holidaymakers who have been left out of pocket

Money guru Martin Lewis has revealed one mistake Brits make when booking a holiday, and it could cost us thousands. Many of us have already locked in our summer trip to sunny Spain, or perhaps you’ve decided to push the boat out and finally splash out on a fortnight in the tropical Maldives.

While booking in advance can be a great way to lock in those cheap deals before prices start to skyrocket, it also increases the risk of something going wrong. Sudden ill health, a loss of job, or even a change in relationship can all jeopardise the future of those future holidays – which could leave you out of pocket. On his eponymously named ITV show, Martin warned: “Travel insurance is not just to cover you while you’re away. It’s also very important to cover you in case something happens before you go that stops you go.”

The ace therefore recommends you get your travel insurance ‘ASAB’ (as soon you book). “But right now, many people have already booked [their holiday],” he added. “If you don’t have your travel insurance and your holiday is booked – do it right now. The money-saving guru explained how every year he receives questions from people who have booked a holiday and then been unable to actually go for a whole host of reasons, including one person who was diagnosed with cancer. However, when they contact their travel firm, they’ve been told they can’t get a refund.

“Do not get your travel insurance the day before you go,” Martin reiterated. “You get your travel insurance ASAB.”

While booking your travel insurance might not be as interesting as shopping for a holiday wardrobe, or planning a bucket-list itinerary – it is important. Make sure you take time to compare different insurance policies, and be aware of what the cover actually protects you from.

Travel insurance experts at Staysure recommend finding a policy that covers injuries, cancellations, and lost or stolen items as a bare minimum. In an exclusive interview with the Mirror, they said: “If you’re off on a cruise or snow-slope adventure, it’s important to remember that you will need to take out specific cover for those types of trips. If you’ll be doing activities such as water sports or hiking, ensure your policy covers these… Leaving things till the last minute may mean that you’re not covered if anything goes wrong in the build-up to your trip and while away.”
