Jay Slater’s family believe the trolls ‘have won’ as Spanish police confirm their search for the 19-year-old has ended, with the apprentice bricklayer still missing after disappearing on June 17

The family of missing teen Jay Slater think the trolls have won after Spanish police called off their search for the 19-year-old, it has been claimed.

Tenerife Police called off their search earlier today (Sunday, June 30) after two weeks of investigating the apprentice bricklayer’s disappearance. He was last seen on June 17. A source close to the family of Jay say they are heartbroken the decision has been made to call off the search and they feel it is because “trolls have won”.

Parents Debbie, Warren and older brother Zak rushed over to the Spanish island to aid the search for their loved one, who was last seen at with two unnamed Brits, one in their late 30s and another in their early 40s.

The family source from the UK told The Sun: “Jay’s family can’t help thinking the trolls have won and that they have got the way. So many people have been putting horrible messages out there which has only added to the family’s torment.

“They will not stop looking for Jay or giving up. They will be staying in Tenerife and trying to do all they can to keep momentum going and to find Jay. They’ve been trying to get in touch with groups in Tenerife and beyond who specialise in missing persons. Jay’s family knew the search would eventually wind down. They get that. But it was a nightmare scenario they didn’t want to think about.

“And it wasn’t something they thought wouldn’t happen immediately. So for the decision to be made after just two weeks has left them bewildered and bereft. Is two weeks really long enough to say you’ve looked everywhere?”

It comes as a former top cop calls for police to look into the Airbnb the missing Brit was staying at and says cops should “go back to their starting point”. Graham Wettone, who spent 30 years with the Met, said: “That’s why I would start again from the beginning and speak to all the witnesses again, my gut feeling is that many of them may not be telling the truth. I would hope that they have at least secured the Airbnb because if evidence is there then it will need to be gathered.”
