Gardeners’ World host Monty Don – who joined the BBC show as its lead presenter in 2003 – has teased that he once accidentally ended up naked in his garden Longmeadow
Broadcaster Monty Don has said that he once accidentally ended up “stark b*****k naked” in his own garden.
The presenter, 69, is known for fronting Gardeners’ World, having taken over as its host in 2003. He briefly left between 2008 and 2011 but has since remained on the long-running BBC Two show, which is yet to return for its next series.
Monty films the BBC show in Longmeadow, which is the sprawling garden located at his home Herefordshire. The two acre garden has become the setting for the show and has been nurtured by the TV star for more than three decades.
He’s now recalled an incident that he said happened once at the property in an interview released this week. The horticulturist has teased that he ended up naked in his garden after cattle once found their way on the vast estate.
Monty told how “sometimes” there’s wildlife in the garden that he doesn’t want there and he recalled cattle once getting in. He said: “I got in the bath, looked out of the window and there was this big white face looking at me.”
He continued: “So I got a towel and rushed outside to chase them. I put on some wellies and then the towel fell and I was running around Longmeadow stark b*****k naked.” Monty added to the Sun that they managed to get the cattle out of the garden though and said that they now “keep them out”.
The interview comes amid the presenter performing at some venues in the UK this month as part of his An Audience with Monty Don tour. The tour began last year but he ended up postponing several dates due to concerns for his health. Monty has since resumed the tour and some of the rescheduled performances have been taking place in recent days.
He posted on Instagram on Thursday: “A couple of shots from last night’s performance in Nottingham. I shall be in Exeter on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon fulfilling the gigs I had to postpone before Christmas due to illness.”
At the end of November last year, it was announced that some tour dates wouldn’t go ahead as planned. Monty told fans in a video message: “Hello. I am so sorry to have disappointed all those people who were going to come and see me in Exeter and Truro and Bath and Nottingham.”
He continued: “But on Friday afternoon I was rushed to A&E and I was kept in the hospital over Saturday, Sunday and Monday attached to drips and all the rest of it, but I came home last night. I’m feeling much better. I’m going to spend the next few days quietly recooperating here at home and hopefully by the weekend I’ll be back to full fitness.”
Looking ahead to the future, it was revealed last month that Monty will remain Gardeners’ World for at least another two years. The Radio Times reports that he will be the show’s lead presenter until at least the end of 2026. He told the outlet: “I never make plans beyond two years, but I’ve agreed to do another two [from January 2025].” He added: “The truth is that I do enjoy it. I’m lucky because it’s in my own garden.”
