Marks & Spencer has unveiled its take on a beloved Australian sweet treat, in what the retailer is touting as a UK ‘first’.

The high street chain is now offering its own version of Lamingtons – small cubes of sponge cake, smothered in chocolate icing and tossed in coconut, a dessert that’s a staple in Australia and New Zealand. These treats are adored overseas and can often be offered in a raspberry version too.

In what M&S claims is a UK ‘first’, customers can now indulge in two flavours of this delicacy, one sticking to the traditional Australian Lamington recipe, while the second introduces a fresh twist.

M&S has launched the Chocolate and Coconut Lamington in stores this week, putting their unique spin on the classic Aussie delight. The cakes feature a buttermilk-enriched chocolate sponge, drenched in chocolate sauce, rolled in coconut flakes and topped off with hand-piped jam and buttercream.

For their second offering, M&S has put a creative spin on the treat’s classic flavours, resulting in a Caramelised Biscuit Lamington. This involves a rich chocolate sponge rolled in caramelised biscuit crumb and finished with hand-piped buttercream and a drizzle of salted caramel sauce.

Alice Birch, Product Developer for bakery treats at M&S Food, said: “Lamingtons are definitely the most iconic cake from down under and it’s very exciting to be the first to bring our version of this beloved Aussie classic to the UK high street.”

She added: “Ours are extra special – they’re hand finished with toppings and super indulgent thanks to the rich chocolate sponge and chocolate sauce coating.

“We’ve also got a trendy caramelised biscuit variant that we’re confident shoppers will be going wild for on social media.”

Lamingtons are believed to have been christened after Lord Lamington, Governor of Queensland during the 1890s, after his chef allegedly created the very first batch to serve surprise visitors using only leftover Victoria sponge, chocolate and coconut, reports the Manchester Evening News.

M&S revealed their take on the delicacies are made in the UK and will be available nationwide for £4, in packs of two.

The retailer’s new Chocolate and Coconut Lamingtons and Caramelised Biscuit Lamingtons can both be purchased in M&S shops from Wednesday, August 27 as well as on Ocado.
