A woman, who’s eight months pregnant, has been left feeling irritated by her friends and family’s reaction to the name she’s chosen for her baby boy, after struggling to come to a decision for months
A pregnant woman is feeling the heat after finally choosing a name for her baby boy, only to be met with “weird reactions” from friends and family.
Choosing the right name for your child is no small feat – it’s got to fit them at every stage, from their first cry as a new-born to a full-grown shout as an adult.
Most parents are on the hunt for the ideal name for their children, mulling over whether to pay tribute to a much-loved relative, opting for a favourite fictional character, or picking something they believe will be ageless enough to suit their little one through the years.
One expectant mum, currently eight months along, found herself struggling to pin down a name for her little boy until country crooner Colter Wall’s tunes hit her ears.
The Canadian singer-songwriter, 29, is famed for his gravelly, deep tones and songs that offer folk and Western influences.
Hearing his name, the mum-to-be believed it was the perfect option for her son, with her husband equally impressed and firmly on board.
But her family and friends seem less than convinced. On Reddit, she shared her exasperation: “I’m 8 months pregnant and everyone keeps asking me what we are naming our son.
“I have been keeping it from my family and friends but they keep bothering me and my husband so we are finally starting to tell people and the reactions honestly annoy tf [the f***] out of me.
“We are naming our son Colter; we were having a really hard time landing on a name and one day I was listening to Colter Wall and it hit me that I really love that name.”
She continued: “It was the first name I suggested that my husband got excited over and we decided that was it. We also really love the nickname Colt and he kicks like a horse in utero.”
But their friends and family have given less-than-thrilled responses. The woman vented: “The problem is, now that we’re telling people, we’ve gotten a lot of weird reactions from family and friends and it’s honestly starting to p*** me off.
“Even if you hate a name someone picked, just act excited or say something nice. I know people say just ignore it and who cares what others think but it’s starting to get to me.”
Despite her mother and best friend adoring the name, she confessed that additional support would be welcome.
On Reddit, other parents weighed in with their opinions. One user remarked: “People have strong reactions to new names, but they get over it. Our son is almost 18 months now and at this point I could not care less what anyone thinks of his name but him.”
Another advised: “I think no matter what you named him you would be getting mixed reactions. Everyone has different opinions and no name is going to please everyone. That’s why it only matters what you and your family think! And also why a lot of parents don’t share the name ahead of time these days”.
Another person chimed in: “Next time, I’d keep it a secret until the baby arrives. For some reason people are less inclined to be rude about the name once the baby is actually here.”
