A bride has been left devastated after her wedding day was ruined by her own father when he broke the one rule she had put in place – and called her selfish for not backing down
Your wedding day should be all about you and your partner. Whether you want to have a big wedding with hundreds of people in attendance or a smaller affair with just your closest family and friends, everyone’s perfect wedding looks different, and there’s no right or wrong way to go about holding the ceremony.
It’s not just the size of the marriage ceremony that’s up to you, either. You can choose whether you want to serve alcohol at your wedding, whether you want to allow young children to attend, and even if you want to ban certain people. Your guests don’t have to like it, of course, and they’re free not to attend if they disagree with your choices, but you have the final say on your wedding day.
One newlywed woman, however, had her wedding “ruined” by her own father when he decided to go behind her back and break the one rule she set in place.
In a post on Reddit, the bride said she got married last month and when she sent out the invitations to her family, she explicitly told her dad that his new wife, whom she gave the fake name “Jen” to hide her identity, could not come.
She made this decision because her dad cheated on her mum with Jen when the bride was just 12-years-old, which caused her parents to divorce. While she doesn’t hate Jen, she didn’t want her at the wedding because it wasn’t the appropriate setting to give her a “second chance”.
She said: “I got married last month. My parents divorced when I was 12 because my dad had an affair with ‘Jen’, who is now his wife. I don’t hate Jen, but I also don’t love her. She’s never apologised for the pain she caused, and she tends to talk about my childhood like she was always part of it.
“For my wedding, I invited my dad. Not Jen. I was clear and kind about it. I told him, ‘This day is about me. Not forgiveness, not second chances, just joy.’ He was upset, but said he understood.”
But on her wedding day, the bride was left horrified and heartbroken to discover that her dad had brought Jen with him anyway. And not only was she at the wedding, but she was wearing a cream dress that’s often considered a faux pas, as it’s too close to the traditional white colour that’s reserved for the bride.
The woman told her dad that Jen needed to leave, and her dad’s response left her devastated. He told her: “Come on. Be the bigger person. Don’t ruin your own wedding over a grudge.”
She then told him that she wasn’t ruining her wedding, but he was. She then made Jen leave, and her dad “sulked” for the rest of the night.
The bride ended her post: “If someone asks you not to bring your affair partner to their wedding, maybe don’t bring your affair partner to their wedding.”
Commenters on the post were firmly on the bride’s side. Many said she should be prepared for Jen causing drama over the wedding, but told her to stand her ground.
One person said: “Good move on your part, s****y move on dad’s part. He tried to force you to do things his way at your own wedding. Good bet that the affair partner is the driving force behind this.”
Another added: “I’m glad you stood up for yourself! Be ready for the war Jen will start and don’t feel bad for it and don’t take her s**t anymore.
“Also, who wears cream to a wedding? A homewrecker. When your dad finally stops throwing a tantrum, I would ask why he thought it was okay for her to wear cream.”
