A woman has been left gobsmacked after hearing the fish-themed name her sister plans on giving to her son – and was even more shocked to learn her sibling isn’t joking

Judging parents on their baby name choices is generally frowned upon – but some names are just too strange to stay silent.

When it comes to naming a baby, you can pretty much choose anything that takes your fancy. Whether you like classic and timeless monikers or want to opt for something a bit different, there’s no right or wrong name to give your child. You may, however, face criticism and strange looks if you opt for something incredibly bizarre.

One mum-to-be left her sister gobsmacked with the name she’s chosen for her son, as the moniker was so unique she believed her sibling was joking at first.

In a post on Reddit, the woman said her sister has been obsessed with marine life since she was a child, and always wanted a sea-themed name for her child when the time came.

And while there are plenty of unique nautical names out there – such as Ocean, Marina, Coral, and Finn – the mum-to-be has chosen to name her son after a fish. Specifically, the sea bass.

The woman’s sister shared: “She said she settled on the name ‘Seabass’, yes, the fish. I am not making this up, I truly wish I was. She’s always been a playful person so I truly thought she was joking but she said she really loved it.”

The mum-to-be – who is currently seven months pregnant – has even gone out and bought custom name signs and a monogrammed blanket with ‘Seabass’ written on it, proving she isn’t messing around when it comes to the unusual moniker.

“I told her that I really don’t think this is a good choice, tried to give her other nature or ocean names, and even asked if she could use the name Sebastian,” the soon-to-be aunt continued: “But she wasn’t having it and said ‘This name feels right for him’. I know he’s not my child, and so I’m trying to respect her choice.”

Commenters on the post were floored by the mum’s chosen name for her son. Some said Seabass would make an adorable nickname for a boy named Sebastian, but they would never use it as a full name.

One person wrote: “Oh, good grief. We know a little guy called Sebastian who gets called Seabass by his family, but it’s not like it’s his actual name!”

Another added: “I actually can’t think of a way to respond to this in a nice way… I am genuinely flabbergasted.”
