Bruno Guimaraes promised Newcastle fans when he signed and they were threatened by relegation that he would do everything he could to lead them to a trophy – on Sunday he delivered
Bruno Guimaraes described winning Newcastle United’s first major domestic trophy in 70 years as “the best day of my life.”
The victorious captain was in tears after Eddie Howe’s team put in a stunning Wembley performance to lift the Carabao Cup.
“It’s all for these fans,” he declared. “They deserve everything. When I first came here, I said I wanted to put my name in history.
“We can now say we are the champions again. I don’t have any words. It’s the best day of my life. For them (the fans), it’s like the World Cup. People have grown up and not seen us as champions. My first year as captain of this club … this is unbelievable.
“This is my second home. We are making history. Some day, when I leave this club, I want the fans to sing my name the way they do to Shearer. He texted me before the game. I’m so emotional.”
And Dan Burn, who scored the opener before Alexander Isak doubled the lead and has also been named in the England squad, said: “I’ve had worse weeks. I don’t want to go to sleep because I feel like I’m dreaming and it’s all going to be a lie.”
Howe said: “It was an incredible day. I thought we were magnificent. It was not a lucky win. It was great. This club has had its fair share of difficult moments so I am glad the fans have got this trophy.
“Hopefully we can get some more in the future. This is a day we will never forget.”
And Howe became emotional when talking about his feelings at the final whistle, explaining how he thought of making his late mum proud.
“And now, I’ve got three boys and I want to make them proud,” he declared.
