Despite suffering from post-viral fatigue after having pneumonia, Queen Camilla joined King Charles, Prince William and guests including David and Victoria Beckham at Buckingham Palace last night

Queen Camilla stoicly braved on last night – to join the royals at Buckingham Palace for a state dinner – despite her post-viral fatigue after having pneumonia.

Camilla, 77, was diagnosed with pneumonia recently, news which emerged yesterday after Camilla missed the ceremonial welcome during the Qatari state visit after suffering significantly diminished reserves of energy following her chest infection.

The Queen contracted her chest infection after a long-haul trip to Australia and Samoa and has pulled out of a series of engagements since then, including the Royal Variety Performance, the Gladiator II premiere and the Remembrance Day service at The Cenotaph.

But it is understood she no longer has the viral pneumonia and so was able to join King Charles, Prince William and guests, including David and Victoria Beckham, at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday evening. She posed for a group photo with the King, the Emir of Qatar and his wife in the archway of the White Drawing Room before the banquet.

But chest infections are relatively common this time of year and can easily worsen to pneumonia, which essentially is the inflammation of the lungs. The NHS lists nine symptoms Brits should watch out for as these can start suddenly.

Symptoms of pneumonia

  • a cough – you may cough up yellow or green mucus (phlegm)
  • making wheezing noises when you breathe – babies may also make grunting noises
  • feeling confused – this is common in older people

These signs are not exhaustive and pneumonia could display as one symptom, or as a combination of the above and others. Most people get better in two to four weeks, but babies, older people, and people with heart or lung conditions are at risk of getting seriously ill and may need treatment in hospital. Antibiotics are usually administered to treat the inflammation of the lungs.

The Queen told guests at the function she had suffered from pneumonia. She wore diamond earrings from her own private collection and a ruby and diamond bracelet.

On her gown were both the family orders of Elizabeth II and King Charles III. The diamond-encased miniature portraits of the monarchs are set on coloured silk bows and worn on the left shoulder.
