A woman has been left fuming at her ‘nightmare’ younger flatmate after the pair fell out over a tumble dryer – and now she’s on the hunt for a new place to live

Living in a shared flat can be challenging – even with your closest friends.

Disagreements are inevitable and can make things tough. One woman is currently on the hunt for a new home after finding it difficult to live with her roommates. She moved into a shared flat hoping to get along with her friend and another person who was a stranger to her.

However, she described living with the unfamiliar roommate as a ‘nightmare’. The latest disagreement erupted over the use of a noisy tumble dryer. The woman, who vented her frustrations on Reddit, had put her sheets in the washing machine in the evening. But when her roommate returned from work with a headache, she declared that no one could use the tumble dryer due to her discomfort.

Unwilling to leave her wet sheets in the washer overnight, the original poster refused, leading to chaos. Baffled by her younger roommate’s behaviour, the 27-year-old woman took to the internet to share her experience with her 25-year-old flatmate, whom she referred to as Anne.

The woman shared: “Some days ago, I was coming back from visiting a house with a friend and we were eating in the living room. Anne comes back from work and makes a big scene about telling us how exhausted she is and how bad of a headache she has. She is nearly tearing up. As I have regular migraines when working, I can understand how painful it is so I tell her to go to sleep in a dark room. She agrees and leaves.

“It was early evening and I had just washed my bed sheets so unfortunately I had to use the dryer. We live in an apartment so when the dryer starts, we can hear it but it is a regular noise and not very loud. Once we are done eating, I went to put my sheets in the dryer and then, went back to talk with my friend.

“A few minutes later, Anne storms off of her room and starts telling me rather aggressively that it’s not appropriate to put the dryer on when she has a headache.”

The woman apologised and explained she’d already put her washing on before she knew her flatmate had a headache, but Anne wasn’t having any of it. The standoff between the two didn’t end well for either party.

“She stood her ground, was very aggressive and forced me to only put the dryer for one hour (which was not enough to dry my laundry but since I hate conflicts I let it go). She then proceeded to complain about it during the whole hour,” the woman recounted.

“I was super mad and frustrated,” she confessed. “But my mom says I should learn how to compromise and be more kind to people.” The post sparked a lively debate among Reddit users, who largely sided with the author, criticising Anne for her behaviour. One user chimed in: “There’s being considerate of others (which you were) and then there’s others demanding the world stop if they want it to..”

Another commented: “I’m pretty sure arguing and working herself into a fury over this and the additional stress that caused her did more harm to her then the noise from you drying your bedsheets did.”

However, others offered a different perspective, with one stating: “She shouldn’t have come out and been rude to you, but your washing would survive for an evening, or you could’ve hung them over some doors etc. Turning something off for someone that says it’s hurting them is a simple request and it seems a bit obsessive that you HAD to dry them then and there.”
