Baby Guinness is a popular cocktail at Christmas, but if you’re looking to make yourself one or two this festive season, you might want to try this one-bottle version instead
The Baby Guinness is a popular boozy treat around Christmastime, and fans of the drink have now discovered that a nostalgic product is the perfect one-bottle alternative.
A Baby Guinness is a great little drink for the festive season, as one of the main ingredients is Baileys, which is commonly seen at this time of year, mostly due to how wrong it feels to down the Irish cream liqueur in the middle of summer. The cocktail is drunk in shot form and comprises coffee liqueur – such as Kahlua or Tia Maria – and an Irish cream like Baileys. It gets its name from the way the Baileys sits on top of the coffee liqueur in the shot glass, making it look like a tiny version of a pint of Guinness.
If you want to try the drink yourself but don’t want to shell out on two bottles of liqueurs that will be left sitting in your cupboard for months afterwards, then you’ll want to listen to this – there’s a product on the market that’s basically Baby Guinness in a bottle, and it’s been around for decades.
Sheridan’s Coffee Layered Liqueur is a bottle that consists of two compartments – one that contains a coffee-infused whiskey, and the other that is filled with a white chocolate liqueur. Although these aren’t the two types of alcohol traditionally used in a Baby Guinness, you’ll still get the same result when you fill your glass, and according to The Drinks Basket, the beverage is “a nutty, comforting sipper that’s elegant and delicious”.
The bottle of booze – which first hit shop shelves in 1994 – went viral recently after a TikTok user shared how he makes a baby Guinness-style shot from the product. The fan, who posts under the username @mancavebartender, wrote: “Baby Guinness in a bottle! How do you pour your Sheridan’s coffee layered liqueur?” However, as the product does use different types of alcohol than a traditional Baby Guinness, the TikTok user did note that the taste isn’t exactly the same. He added: “I’m not saying it’s the same taste but it looks like a Baby Guinness.”
Meanwhile, plumbing experts recently issued a warning to Baby Guinness drinkers this Christmas, as they said you should never pour Baileys down your sink as it could clog the pipes and “wreak havoc”. They said: “Cream liqueur drinks, such as the popular Christmas favourite, Baileys, can be a problem for your plumbing at Christmas. While it may be delicious to drink, it doesn’t keep for long and often ends up down the sink.
“However, this sort of beverage should never be disposed of in this way. Cream liqueurs have a large fat content and as such fall into the category of FOG (Fats, Oils, and Greases). FOG should never go down the sink, as it sticks to pipes and can cause blockages. It’s also responsible for ‘fatbergs’ in our sewers.”
