Nottingham Forest has yet to decide on the future of four players whose contracts are set to expire at the end of the the 2024/25 season
Not many would have predicted that Nottingham Forest would be sitting pretty in the Premier League top four places after 24 games. In just their third season back in the top flight, the club is enjoying a sensational run of form with 14 wins, 5 losses, and 4 draws in the 2024-25 campaign.
This success can be attributed to the club’s smart signings and effective player management. After a number of windows of a scatter-gun approach, Forest kept their cards close to their chest in January.
Forest had a relatively quiet January transfer window, with retaining key players in their squad the priority. The club has successfully negotiated new deals with some of their key players like Chris Wood and Murillo.
While it seems the club have their bases covered, there are a few players whose contracts are set to expire in the summer. Below, we take a detailed look at the four players whose futures at the club remain uncertain…
Ola Aina
The Nigerian footballer joined the club back in July 2023 and has played 46 games for the club so far. Initially signed on a one-year deal, Aina’s contract was extended for an additional year in 2024.
His current contract is set to expire again this summer, but it includes an automatic one-year extension clause that the club can trigger. Reports suggest that Forest is likely to exercise this option and is keen to retain him beyond that as well.
However, it’s worth noting that no formal agreement has been reached yet. The club will need to act quickly to secure his services beyond this season, or Aina could leave as a free agent.
Harry Toffolo
Toffolo joined Nottingham Forest when the club was promoted to the Premier League in 2022. The left-back has made 54 appearances during his time at the club. Initially, he signed a two-year deal that expired in January 2024.
After signing a two-year deal when he arrived, the club exercised a one-year extension which allows them to keep the 29-year-old until the summer of 2025. It is believed that he would leave the club at the end of the season and become a free agent.
Willy Boly
Boly was one of the 30 signings that Forest made in the 2022-23 season. Since joining, the French-born defender has made 43 appearances for the club.
His current contract is set to expire in June 2025. While Forest hold an option to secure Boly for another year, it is unlikely that he will stay at the club.
The 34-year-old has been linked with a switch to Saudi Arabia and it remains to be seen as to where he eventually ends up.
Wayne Hennessey
Hennessey was part of Nottingham Forest’s signing spree ahead of the 2022-23 Premier League season. The Welsh goalkeeper originally signed a two-year contract, which expired in June 2024.
Although it was announced that he would leave the club, Hennessey remained without a club and continued to train with Forest. In January 2025, he re-signed with Forest on a short-term deal that expires this summer.
Given his lack of game time, it seems unlikely that he will be offered a longer contract. However, there is a possibility that the club could offer him a coaching role after his contract expires.
