Patrice Evra has challenged Luis Suarez to an MMA fight after it was announced that the former Manchester United defender was set to step into the cage next month with the Professional Fighters League (PFL).

Evra has been training since 2016 with longtime friend Cedric Doumbe, who competes in the PFL’s welterweight division and has a 6-1 record, having transitioned to MMA from kickboxing in 2021.

Evra is set to make his MMA debut at PFL Europe Paris on May 23 and he has called out Suarez for a fight 13 years after the former Liverpool striker was given an eight-game ban for racially abusing him.

And Evra also made reference to Suarez being involved in three separate biting incidents throughout his career in a post on social media. “BREAKING: I’m officially training for my first fight with @PFLEurope,” Evra wrote.

“They will pick my opponent… They asked who I wanna face. I said: Luis Suarez. I’ll pay out of pocket. He can even bite me.”

Evra’s opponent for his first fight next month is yet to be announced. “I’ve performed on the world’s biggest stages, won every major trophy in football, but PFL Europe Paris will be an incredibly special night for me,” he added.

“I’ve been training alongside the best in the world for years, and they’ll also tell you I’m ready for this. I’m going to put on a show at the Accor Arena on 23 May, so come watch the spectacle.”

PFL CEO Pete Murray added: “I’m told he loves this game as much as us, and we’ll find out on 23 May. We’re incredibly excited to have the superstar that is Patrice Evra fight under the PFL banner, as we’re all about exciting match-ups and making history.

“I can’t tell you how excited Patrice has been putting this together, but I think you’re going to see it at the Accor Arena. Paris, we’re coming to put on another historic evening of MMA, don’t miss out.”

Evra was set to have a boxing fight back in 2022 after he was announced as part of the undercard for Martyn Ford’s scheduled fight against Iranian Hulk, with the 43-year-old scheduled to fight social media star Adam Saleh. However, the fight never went ahead.

Evra retired from football in 2019 after spells at West Ham, Marseille and Juventus following his departure from United in 2014. During his time at Old Trafford, the France international won five Peemier League titles, the Champions League and three League Cups.
