Fans of Australian television quiz show The 1% Club have taken to social media to try to figure out a question that only 15% of the population can get correct – can you solve it?

People have been left scratching their heads over a tricky brainteaser that only ‘15% of the world’s population can solve’.

The question featured on the Australian television quiz show The 1% Club – and has made its way onto social media as viewers desperately search for the right answer.

Based on the British show of the same name, host Jim Jefferies asks ‘logic and common sense’ questions to his 100 contestants. The questions start easy, with 90% of the country able to answer them, until they reach the most challenging question that only 1% of the country would get right.

The top prize achievable is $100,000 (£51,000). But one of the 15% questions has been tripping everyone up. It reads: “Frodo has forgotten his hotel room number. All he remembers is that it has at least one 9. If the hotel has room numbers from 1 to 100, how many might be Frodo’s?”

With only 30 seconds to answer, most viewers playing along at home admitted defeat. In the comments, one TikTok user said: “I didn’t say 9 because I assumed it had more than one number as it said at least one 9.”

Another user added: “Me confidently saying 10 and forgetting everything between 90 and 98.” A third user said: “I counted one more and got 20. I can’t focus with that guy.” One more user added: “I thought 1 because he only has 1 room.”

While a third said: “9 shouldn’t count since the wording indicates there are at least 2 numbers in his room.” Someone else also wrote: “I didn’t count 99 because I thought they literally meant only “one” nine could be in the answer.” Sharing the answer, the host revealed it to be 19 – saying the possible room numbers are 9, 19, 29, 39, 49, 59, 69, 79, 89 and 90 through to 99.”
