The Libertines frontman Pete Doherty said ‘death’s lurking’ after revealing his diabetes diagnosis this year, but wowed fans with his changed appearance in a new photo

Singer Pete Doherty, 45, revealed his impressive slimmed-down figure in a new Instagram post.

The Libertines star shared a stylish photo on Thursday, showing him sitting on a building’s steps while accompanied by an adorable dog. Pete smoked a cigarette and looked into the distance in the snap, looking sharp in a pinstriped suit. The musician paired the suit with red socks and loafers, adding a fun touch with a flower lapel pin.

Fans were quick to praise Pete for the shot, with one saying: “I’m glad you’re doing well dear.” Another wrote: “Looking sharper and sharper. Keep it up!!” along with a bicep emoji. Pete looked much slimmer in his latest photo, after revealing earlier this year that he had type 2 diabetes.

In an interview with the Guardian’s Saturday magazine, he said: “I gave up the main poisons and my health improved. Then you get told alcohol and cheese and sugar are just as bad and you were healthier when you were on heroin.” Pete went on to call himself “a bit of a glutton,” adding, “It’s not a joke. I’ve been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. And at the moment I’m lacking the discipline to tackle cholesterol.”

Last year, in the BBC’s ‘Louis Theroux Interviews’ series, Pete also opened about his colourful past and how it’s had a detrimental effect on his health. In one scene of the documentary, Pete started to cough, clutch his chest and groan in pain. He explained: “You are looking at a very sick man. I’ve battered it, haven’t I, I’ve f***ing caned it. The heroin and the crack… I surrendered to that, and then it was cocaine and the smoking and the alcohol, and now it’s cheese and the saucisson, and the sugar in the tea.”

Pete continued: “It’s all gotta go. They told me a little while ago if you don’t change your diet then you’re gonna have diabetes and cholesterol problems. Death’s lurking, you know what I mean? That’s why I carry that stick.” The singer has been mostly clean since late 2019, and credits musician Frederic Lo for lifting him out of the darkness that may have otherwise consumed him again.

Pete covered one of his songs, called ‘Inutile et hors d’usage’ which means ‘Useless and all used up’, in early 2020 and really resonated with it. Last year, he told the Mirror: “I got really emotional when he played it to me, it really hit home. I was giving up hard drugs and feeling f***ed really. The best way to describe it for me is like being hit by a bus. It’s still a bit of a struggle but the obsession does lift and it’s getting easier. But at the time it hadn’t quite lifted and it was really tough.” Pete admitted that he feels amazed he’s even alive, let alone still clean, after more than two years.
