Queen Camilla was ‘so nervous’ ahead of her wedding day to King Charles, a royal insider has revealed. The close pal has recalled the nervous moments leading up to the huge day
Queen Camilla and King Charles will celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary this year, but their romance long predates their marriage in 2005.
For a long time, Camilla was not a popular figure in the UK, after it emerged that she and Charles – then Prince of Wales – had an affair, leading to several years that left the Royal Family ridden with scandal.
The late Princess Diana revealed herself the impact that Charles and Camilla’s relationship had on her, and her marriage, leaving Camilla besmirched for many years with the reputation of the other woman and the ‘third person’ in Charles and Diana’s marriage.
For Charles, there was no one but Camilla, and the pair finally made things official and tied the knot back in 2005. Camilla never held the title of Princess of Wales – that Diana had used, and now Princess Kate holds – instead going by the Duchess of Cornwall. However, the late Queen made her wishes known in February 2022 that she wanted Camilla to be known as Queen Consort when Charles took the throne – something that for a long time would have been totally unthinkable.
However, Camilla had worked hard over the years she had been officially in the Royal Family to improve her public image – and prove her dedication to the crown.
But, all the way back in 2005, when she was poised to finally marry Charles, she was seriously “nervous” about the big day, an insider has revealed.
Camilla’s long-time hair stylist, Jo Hansford, explained in an interview with Hello magazine, that Camilla wasn’t the only one who was nervous about the royal wedding, which took place in a civil ceremony at the Windsor Guildhall.
“I had been doing her hair for years, but I was very nervous about doing it for the wedding,” she revealed. “She looked amazing, thank God. She was so nervous. The whole world was watching, and it must have been terrifying, the same as the coronation. But I think she handled it really well.”
Hansford has worked with Camilla for 35 years, and the pair have become seriously close, with the hair stylist invited to the wedding itself, but due to personal tragedy opting not to attend.
“I got an invitation to the wedding, but my husband had just died and I didn’t feel very comfortable going on my own, so I didn’t go, but I still have a slice of wedding cake,” Jo explained.
Neither the late Queen nor Prince Philip attended the civil ceremony itself, but they both came to support the marriage at a blessing that took place afterward at St. George’s Chapel.
The late Queen also gave a moving speech at the wedding reception dedicated to her son and new daughter-in-law. “They have come through and I’m very proud and wish them well. My son is home and dry with the woman he loves,” the former monarch said in the speech.
