It’s always worth checking your rare coin collection to see what’s really hiding there and now everyone’s going wild for a 50p which is “one of the most popular” in circulation

People are going wild for a rare coin which is the “most popular” in circulation.

The 50p could be quite valuable and might be lurking in your pocket without you even realising it. According to one TikTok user, the piece must feature an error which makes it worth more than face value. So do you have this in your stash?

User @CoinCollectingWizard, who boasts 210,500 followers, revealed the Sir Isaac Newton 50p was first issued in 2017 and there’s a few things you need to look out for which makes it more valuable than the others.

In the video, which racked up hundreds of likes, he said: “This 50p could have an error making it valuable. The Sir Isaac Newton 50p is one of the most popular 50p’s in circulation, shortly after it was issued in 2017.”

He continued: “What you are looking for is for the obverse to have several extra lines across Queen Elizabeth’s portrait. If your coin has these lines, then congratulations you have found it.

“This is thought to be an error caused during the striking process, a result of what is known as a dye clash. Interestingly, the extra lines aren’t grooves scratched into the surface of the coin. But rather whiskers standing slightly proud of the surface.

“Although we don’t know for sure how many of these error coins are in circulation, they’re thought to be extremely rare. They’ve even been listed on the secondary market for more than 100 times face value.”

If you think you own a rare coin, there’s a number of things you should do. Firstly, get a professional valuation, this could be based on its rarity, condition and historical significance. You can get a free valuation from an expert, like the Royal Mint.

You could also research the coin which helps you learn more about its rarity, history and potential value. There are books, websites and a guide which could help you understand more about your coin.
