A coin enthusiast has revealed the rarest 50p coin in active circulation, and said that the value of the coin is ‘skyrocketing’ – so you might want to check your change

When it comes to rare coins, the Kew Gardens 50p is often the first that springs to mind. It’s notoriously elusive, with only 210,000 in circulation since its release in 2009.

But now, there’s a new 50p coin that’s even rarer than the Kew Gardens piece. TikTok user @CoinCollectingWizard, who boasts a following of 205,000, recently highlighted the Atlantic Salmon 50p as the scarcest coin currently in active circulation.

“With only 200,000 of these, this is an exciting day for coin collecting. It takes the crown from the all-mighty Kew Gardens 50p coin which held the title for the past 15 years,” he said.

The Atlantic Salmon 50p was launched at the end of 2023 as part of the national celebrations for King Charles III’s Coronation year.

“This coin has now officially dethroned the Kew Gardens 50p, which had a mintage of 210,000 when it first came out in 2009”, he added.

He also noted that the Atlantic Salmon 50p is currently the most sought-after 50p piece, with prices skyrocketing on eBay and other coin groups, the Daily Record reports.

His insights quickly sparked excitement among his followers, with his video garnering nearly 700 likes and a flurry of comments. One excited collector shared: “My daughter has two of these,” which led to the response: “Excellent, keep them safe.” Another enthusiast gushed: “Really excited, can’t control myself here.”

A third chimed in with: “So exciting, great video.”

If you’re lucky enough to own the coveted Atlantic Salmon 50p coin, getting it valued by a specialist is recommended. Meanwhile, eBay bids suggest this scarce piece might reel in over £50.
