Tom Gilbey says “no thanks” to a Portuguese favourite, but has high praise for an Antipodean tipple

A wine expert and social media sensation has shared his opinion on a popular red, branding the tipple as “absolutely revolting”.

Tom Gilbey, who shares wine reviews on TikTok, recently threw down some thoughts about a Portuguese red that apparently should taste like “dark fruit flavours and a hint of spice.”

In another of his iconic videos on TikTok, the viral favourite known as “the wine guy” took a taste of the £8 wine so that we didn’t have to. Originating from the Lisbon area, Porto 6 is made from 50% Tinta Roriz grapes, which are the same as the Tempranillo variety from Spain.

For anyone new to red wine, understanding the heady world of fancy grape varieties could be enough to have you reaching for a soft drink. Luckily for us, Tom is on hand to explain that Tempranillo is that grape variety used to make those “soft, juicy, give-me-a-hug wines from Rioja.”

Faced with the Portuguese bottle with the picture of a tram on it, he said: “But have we got a give me a hug wine from Portugal? For £8 it is quite cheap.”

Giving the glass a good swirl to help release the aroma, he describes the scent as serving up “a bit of black fruit, some dark cherry, some plum and liquor chocolates – like the kind left over from Christmas.”

The expert takes a slug and quickly spits it back out again. His verdict is to the point and leaves no room for confusion, as he says resolutely: “That’s absolutely revolting. It’s like jammy, juicy nothingness that gets you, Porta 6, a massive, hairy no”

With the Portuguese red firmly off the menu, our the wine expert shared a delicious alternative from the other side of the world that will cost you just a few quid more.

In another recent review, the plonk master reviewed a bottle of Jacobs Creek Double Barrelled Mature Shiraz that he picked up in Asda to enjoy with a nice juicy steak.

Describing the supermarket best-seller, he said: “It’s dark and deep exactly what I want a Shiraz to look like, almost black inside. It’s ripe, it’s blackberry, and it’s got that little bit of mint that I get from a really good Australian Shiraz.”

Taking a sizeable slurp he exclaims: “It’s got lovely creaminess to it, it’s quite rich, it’s got a bit of residual sugar I think and the tannins are really soft.”

Concluding that the £10.50 Jacobs Creek is indeed a “red wine with massive nuts” the vino aficionado would definitely recommend paying a few quid extra for a better bottle and leaving the Porto 6 on the shelf.
