Manchester United desperately need some signings to get themselves back on track in the Premier League this season and new boss Ruben Amorim has now settled on his first signing

Ruben Amorim has given his approval to his first signing as Manchester United boss as he tries to solve a problem position for the Red Devils.

The Portuguese took the reins from former boss Erik ten Hag in November. But he has endured a stuttering start so far at Old Trafford.

Amorim has led the Red Devils to three wins, two defeats and a draw in all competitions. It has left United sitting 13th in the Premier League ahead of Sunday’s Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe could choose to invest in the side during the January transfer window in an effort to improve the club’s fortunes and Amorim has already given his approval to one signing. According to Estadio Deportivo, the former Sporting Lisbon head coach has approved a move for Girona defender Miguel Gutierrez.

The Spaniard is reportedly available for €35million (£29m) due to a release clause. A deal could potentially have a few speedbumps however, with Real Madrid also interested, while United would have to engage with owners of Manchester City, who own a 47 per cent stake in the Spanish club.

Gutierrez would certainly solve a problem position for United, who are keen to sign a new left-back in the near future. Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia’s injury issues have seen club chiefs add a left-sided defender to their shopping list.

Gutierrez, 23, joined Girona from Real Madrid in 2022 and has gone on to be a key player for the Spanish side. He has accumulated just under 100 appearances for Girona and helped them to a Champions League place last season.

Elsewhere, Cerro Porteno youngster Diego Leon has also been linked with a move to Old Trafford, with United currently in talks over a bargain deal. A move would become official once he turns 18 but sporting manager Gabriel Wainer has warned that a deal is not sealed yet.

He said: “Manchester United has a clear intention to sign Diego Leon. But the paperwork has not yet been finalised.”

He added: “Other teams have also asked about Leon in the last few hours, but the one that has shown a letter of intent, without going into detail, was Manchester United.”

Away from incomings, United have also made a number of brutal decisions regarding their current squad. It has been reported that just six players are considered ‘unsellable’, with Marcus Rashford among those that the club would be willing to cash in on next month.
