Ruben Amorim has won just two games since taking charge of Manchester United, with his side now on a two-game losing run as the 39-year-old struggles to turn their season around

Ruben Amorim believes his job at Manchester United is bigger than he first feared as he struggles to turn the club’s season around.

Amorim joined the Red Devils over the November international break, replacing the sacked Erik ten Hag. But he has overseen just two wins since his arrival, with only one of those coming in the Premier League.

It is not the start the 39-year-old would have been hoping for, with his side now on a two-game losing run. They have the chance to bounce back in a Europa League trip to Viktoria Plzen on Thursday.

But even if they beat the Czech minnows, it appears Amorim will not be drawn into thinking all their problems are solved. Instead, the Portuguese boss is already reassessing just how long it will take to restore United to their former glory.

According to ESPN, United chief executive Omar Berrada did not try to ‘sugar-coat’ the size of Amorim’s task. But it is claimed that the new boss already believes the job will be ‘more complicated’ than he first thought.

Amorim’s life looks unlikely to get any easier, with a derby against Manchester City coming on Sunday. They then travel to Tottenham in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup nexr Wednesday.

Spurs beat United 3-0 at Old Trafford in a Premier League clash in September. Amorim saw his side fall to a 3-2 defeat to Nottingham Forest on Sunday and admitted afterwards that they have a lot of work to do.

“We already knew it will be a long journey. But we want to win because this is a massive club and you feel it. When you lose one game, it is really hard for everybody and I can understand that. I can feel it in the stadium after the first goal,” Amorim said.

“We understand the context, but we have to keep in the same way, doing the same things. The same words that I had after Everton, I have today. Continue to focus on the performance.

“We need to improve a lot of aspects of the game and continue to do things in training. I had this and worse at Sporting in the beginning. The feeling for me is the same [as back then]. For the world, it’s completely different.

“Sporting are known in Portugal, but Manchester United has a lot of attention. But for me, it’s the same feeling. I had this experience at Sporting. If you are a little bit experienced in football, this happened at a lot of clubs.

“We have to continue to do the same things and improve the team because this will turn around. We need time and to continue to work in the same way every day.”
