New Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has been getting acquainted with his new colleagues and surroundings this week after finally leaving Sporting Lisbon

Ruben Amorim says he feels “relaxed” after seeing Old Trafford for the first time since officially starting as Manchester United’s new boss.

Amorim, whose first game as United boss is at Ipswich a week on Sunday, was given a guided tour of Old Trafford and the facilities there earlier this week.

Asked how he felt about standing inside Old Trafford as United boss, Amorim said: “You watch on TV and you know that it’s big and it’s impressive, but when you are here, you can feel it.

“You can feel the history. I’m really, really proud to be a Manchester United coach. It’s amazing, it’s a real honour.”

Amorim, speaking to MUTV, said: “I feel very relaxed, maybe because it’s not game day. When we have a game I’m a different guy. But I really don’t feel the weight.

“I’m really excited and I’m quite relaxed. I think I’m where I’m supposed to be. That’s the feeling.”

It was confirmed at the start of the month that the highly sought-after Portuguese coach would be appointed as Erik ten Hag’s permanent successor after the former Ajax chief was sacked back in October.

Amorim’s reputation has soared over the past 12 months due to his impressive body of work at Sporting Lisbon and United captain Bruno Fernandes is excited to get to work under his compatriot in the coming weeks.

When he was asked for his thoughts on the appointment, Fernandes said: “Obviously for me, what stands out is the connection he has with the players. You see it at the end of the game when a manager is going from your club in the middle of the season and with all the things that they have still to win.

“And you see the way they say goodbye to him, the way they feel, they make him feel part of the team and how they treat him. So it shows that this is a great character and he’s someone that gives his all to the players.

“He’s also a really smart manager who has done really good things for Sporting tactically. It’s really good, what I’ve seen from the games for Sporting. But obviously as we always speak, you can’t bring or transform what he has done at Sporting into here, because you have different players, you have different ways of play and everything.

“I’m pretty sure that the idea of football he has, independent of the way he wants to play, is going to be a good one and it’s going to bring us success. That’s what I hope and I’m pretty sure that is what he hopes, too.”
